North sands is situated by the ruins of Fort Charles, and is just a short, pleasant stroll away from the town center, making it the ideal beach for an easygoing day out for Salcombe holidaymakers and residents.
North Sands beach is a large sandy beach perfect for families, with great swimming due to the safe bay, and rockpools nearby for exploring. The beach has stunning views of the Salcombe Estuary, Sunny Cove on the East Portlemouth side and out to sea past Wolf Rock.The beach is totally submerged at high tide. The beach is level and the water relatively shallow, but there are no lifeguards at North Sands so due care and attention is advised. Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round and North Sands has been named numerous times as one of the most dog friendly beaches in the area.
South Sands is an unspoilt sandy cove just south of Salcombe. At only a few hundred meters long, the beach still offers a range of activities. Sea Kayak Salcombe is based at South Sands, giving you the opportunity to hire sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, wetsuits and buoyancy aids. They also provide kayaking courses and clinics to help you whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to upgrade your skills. Next door you’ll find Bo’s Beach Café, a popular place to pick up a coffee or a quick bite to eat. This is also the place to go for beach accessories, toys and so on.
The South Sands Passenger Ferry runs between Whitestrand, in the center of Salcombe, and the picturesque beach of South Sands, located at the entrance to Salcombe harbor. Carrying foot passengers, prams and dogs the South Sands Ferry is a rare opportunity to travel by boat and experience the famous ‘sea tractor’, which travels out into the water to greet the ferry as it arrives at South Sands Beach.
