Dragon Boat Race 2018

July 2 2018 Categories: News, Our News, Videos

We did it last year, and we’re doing it again this year. It’s the Dragon Boat Race 2018 at the Crabshell Inn of course. The ultimate team paddle boarding event where 4 paddlers per SUP, paddling in unison and in perfect coordination (hopefully), on the Red Paddle Co Dragon Boat. This should be the ultimate test of team work, paddle technique and speed.

With such a good turn out and audience last year, we’ve decided to organise this “fun” event; which won’t be taken seriously at all (cough, cough)!!

For those who don’t know, a Red Paddle Co Dragon Boat is a 22 foot stand up paddle board. With it’s length and narrow width (34″), combined with four ‘able’ paddlers, this should be the fastest SUP racing craft around! Again this is very dependent on the paddlers, when one loses their balance, you all go; this certainly added to the laughter and entertainment last year, where as expected the Red Paddle Board team won. Can any of the teams entering this year knock take their title from them?

As with the year before, this tournament will carry the same knock-out format. There are eight men’s teams, and four women’s teams.

  • Two men’s heats of 4 – top two in each heat make it to the final
  • Women’s straight final heat.

One of the aims of this event is to raise the awareness of paddle boarding, and to highlight the fun you can have in the water, we will also be donating all entry monies The Salcombe RNLI.

This event is a great way to get those in the area together, in a semi-competitive environment, to do what we all love doing: going for a paddle followed by a beer.

Look forward to seeing you all at The Crabshell Inn, Kingsbridge, at 18:00 on Friday 13th July. The first race starting at 18:30.

For those of you completely new to the concept of Dragon Boat racing, here is a clip from the Red Paddle Co Dragon Boat Race series 2017, held in Barbados. We’re not quite there yet, but The Crabshell Inn on high tide on a beautiful sunny evening is still pretty special!
